"Change of Heart" was written while I was between "day gigs" and was feeling rather sorry for myself. I decided that I was through with the self-pity and decided to channel my newly rediscovered outlook into a new piece of music. The piece was truly inspired by my own change of heart toward my situation.
Several months after it was finished I showed it to Frank Mantooth for his critique. He took one look at the lead sheet with the shifting 4/4 and 3/4 time changes and said "I see why you called it 'Change of Heart'".
I guess the title works on multiple levels!
I have since adapted the piece for full orchestra and am pleased to say it makes the transition nicely. The beautiful flugelhorn work here was done by Ken Boyd. This was also the first cut played off the "Good Intentions" album on Twin Cities radio.
